1912 Craftsman

Featured in the September 20, 2007, Oregonian Homes & Gardens, this large Craftsman home suffered not only a serious fire in the 1930s, but also a remodeling as a Colonial Revival, a popular style at that time. When we were asked to do a kitchen remodel and rebuild the front porch, Wade noticed the house’s exterior looked out of place, and he recommended that the client do some historical research on the home, beginning with the Oregon Historical Society. The client ultimately found her house, as newly built, featured in the now-defunct Oregon Journal. We embarked on the restoration of the home, recreating period details from the feature’s photos and from similar-style period houses in the neighborhood. We restored the characteristic eaves, overhangs, barge rafters and brackets that had been removed; replaced all the shingle siding; and installed a period-appropriate window grouping indicated by shadow lines and confirmed by photographs.

Knowing that [the front porch] would be the focal point of the house, we wanted only the finest artisans in all of Portland to bring the old porch back to life – this had become a labor of love!  My daughter, a landscape architect, researched several local design firms, and after meeting with Wade Freitag, decided that Craftsman Design and Renovation was clearly the one for the job.
