1911 Nicholas C. Merges House

As in nearly all we do, history informed the materials selection in this Arts and Crafts kitchen. The soapstone and stainless steel countertop reflects the stone and zinc found in period homes. While we couldn’t salvage the original thin maple strip flooring, we mimicked it with bamboo strip flooring, which is similar in look and scale.

The client wanted to replace a 1960s kitchen remodel featuring plywood, Formica and vinyl, with something more befitting their 1911 Arts and Crafts home and their lifestyle. Removing a wall between the sitting room and the kitchen added sunlight and space. We doubled the counter area, added seating with a built-in banquette, introduced a kitchen triangle arrangement with multiple workstations, and improved traffic flow.
