We embraced this labor of love as if it were our own. Our client’s grandfather had built this home in 1954, using the most current materials and design of the day. A half-century later, his work was showing some wear. While other contractors said “tear it all out,” we were as passionate as the homeowner about retaining and restoring as much as possible of the kitchen’s ancestry and character, including the cabinets with slanted fronts and sliding doors. We matched the original cabinet detailing, replacing the abused lower cabinets and restoring the uppers. The room was enlivened with a mosaic glass tile backsplash, updated lighting, and laminate countertops with period metal edging and rubber accent.
As much as they loved the old, the owners also found themselves appreciating the new more than they expected. Initially, they didn’t think they would spend much time at the added eating nook, but they daily enjoy their coffee while sitting there, enjoying the view of Forest Park through the newly installed French doors.
