Our clients’ 1916 bungalow was suitably sufficiently spacious, but the rooms were poorly designed and scaled, diminishing their utility and charm. Custom-designed built-ins now carve out greater function within the home’s footprint and infuse it with a distinct personality.
The small kitchen acquired a more spacious feel and entertaining and storage space with a built-in buffet and inglenook that incorporates a small bookcase. The cold, stark sunroom finally lives up to its name with warm finishes and a wrap-around bench for relaxing. An ingenious under-bench drawer hides a cat box entry equipped with a remote fan that noiselessly vents the space.
Upstairs, an open landing area acquires identity as a family room with a built-in entertainment center and bookshelves. Doubling its function, the sewing room has a roll-out daybed for guests and a bookcase with a pull-out work surface for cutting. As the couple’s expected child grows, the nursery will grow with them: a bookshelf doubles as a cushioned changing station and later as a laptop workspace, and a wardrobe with removable shelves makes room for longer hanging clothes.
