The clients wanted to restore this 1917 airplane bungalow, retaining its original style while adding modern conveniences and increasing energy efficiency. The renovation included a kitchen, two bathrooms, built-ins, insulation, windows, and restoration of the living room and dining room finishes. We replaced French windows, salvaging the old glass to reglaze custom-built windows to fit in seamlessly with the old.
In the kitchen, removal of a chimney helped to integrate the refrigerator into a more central location, improve traffic flow, and allowed space for a built-in armoire and bench seat upstairs. The cabinet bases were bumped out to accommodate a modern dishwasher and farm sink. We removed a mudroom to bring in more natural light and a view of the backyard.
In the bathrooms, we added built-in cabinets, wainscoting, restored and replaced floor tile and an original claw foot tub. We also installed new plumbing fixtures, and built a walk-in tiled shower, and added a solar tunnel to bring natural light into the upper bath.
We created storage in the sewing room with built-in bookcases recessed into the adjacent attic space. All plaster was removed to install insulation, drywall and energy-efficient casement windows, making the home as warm and cozy feeling as it looks.
